Engineered Sports Surface Solutions

  • World-class surfaces anywhere
  • Multi-use stadium optimisation
  • Data-driven, tailored engineering

At SGL, our Engineered Sports Surface Solutions (ESSS) redefine what stadiums can achieve. We combine advanced engineering, data-driven insights, and customised technology to deliver elite natural grass surfaces while enabling stadiums to operate as versatile, multi-use venues for sports, entertainment, and events.

From the earliest design phase through project delivery and long-term support, we collaborate with architects, engineers, and stadium operators to create unique, tailored solutions. By integrating LED grow lighting, climate control, robotics, and other environmental systems, ESSS ensures exceptional playing surfaces, operational efficiency, and maximised revenue potential for every venue.

For those shaping the future of stadiums

Engineered Sports Surface Solutions (ESSS) is designed for stadiums and venues that require customised, high-performance solutions. It is ideal for new or existing stadium projects where multi-use functionality, operational efficiency, and elite playing surfaces are critical.

ESSS is particularly suited to architects and engineers seeking innovative design integration, stadium operators and facility managers aiming to optimize performance and revenue, and professional sports clubs or investors who demand the highest standards of turfgrass quality and stadium functionality. In short, ESSS serves anyone looking to elevate a stadium into a world-class, multi-purpose venue.

Why ESSS makes a difference

Engineered Sports Surface Solutions (ESSS) delivers more than just world-class turfgrass. Our approach combines advanced engineering, data-driven insights, and tailored systems to optimise stadium performance, unlock multi-use potential, and ensure long-term operational and commercial success.

Elite playing surfaces

ESSS delivers the highest quality playing surfaces, optimised for athlete performance and safety. By integrating our solutions, stadiums maintain turf density, resilience, consistency under heavy use, and short turnaround times. Leveraging over 15 years of global data and predictive modeling, ESSS helps grounds teams anticipate challenges and adapt to changing conditions, ensuring surfaces that look and perform at their best for every event.

Multi-use functionality & revenue optimisation

Our solutions transform stadiums into high-quality, multi-purpose venues, enabling sports, concerts, and other events without compromising turf quality. Early collaboration with architects and engineers ensures every system is optimised for smooth transitions between event types. Predictive modeling helps stadiums handle intensive schedules efficiently, maximising utilisation and commercial potential while maintaining world-class playing conditions.

Tailor-made solutions

The world’s-first integrated pitch grow lighting system

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium set a new benchmark in stadium design by combining elite football performance with multipurpose use. To support its natural grass pitch, we engineered the world’s first fully integrated grow lighting system, built directly into the stadium’s architecture. This permanent solution delivers optimal light coverage without the need for mobile units, ensuring consistent turf quality while maximising operational efficiency. It reflects the club’s vision for innovation and sets a model for the future of stadium pitch management.

Full-pitch grow lighting set-up suspended from the roof

AT&T Stadium is one of the world’s most iconic multipurpose venues, traditionally using artificial turf. For the CONMEBOL Copa América 2024 and FIFA World Cup 26™, the stadium required a natural grass surface of the highest standard. We developed a full-pitch grow lighting system suspended from the roof, providing uniform grass growth and resilience in a challenging environment. This innovation allows AT&T Stadium to meet the demands of international football while maintaining its flexibility for other sports and entertainment.

Growing a top-quality pitch in the world’s largest indoor covered football stadium

At Kingdom Arena, the challenge was unprecedented: how to grow and maintain a natural grass pitch inside the world’s largest fully enclosed football stadium. We created a complete microclimate solution that provides the turf with everything it needs to thrive, from LED grow lights and airflow to grass disease control. This engineered system guarantees a consistently high-quality playing surface, enabling the venue to host elite football and large-scale events year-round.

Our specialists

Lee Collier, Project Development Director

Lee Collier is one of the most experienced sports surface designers in the industry and takes a lead role in developing and delivering SGL’s engineered sports surface solutions portfolio. As stadiums evolve to drive venue activation and revenue, they are increasingly diversifying beyond their core sporting function into versatile, multi-use hubs. This requires the strategic integration of innovation and technology to ensure seamless delivery of both sports and non-sports events. Lee’s key strength lies in selecting the optimal strategy for each situation and then working creatively to deliver a fully realised solution.

Marc Zeestraten

Marc Zeestraten, Special Projects & Operations Manager

Marc Zeestraten has played a key role in all special projects that SGL delivered. From a fully integrated grow light solution at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, to hanging LED grow lights on the roof of AT&T Stadium, and a complete indoor solution in Kingdom Arena, Marc has been involved from A to Z. He knows how to hit even the most (impossibly looking) deadlines, gets the right people involved at exactly the right time, and brings an unbelievable work ethic to every project he touches.
