Alan’s role at FIFA involves overseeing the preparation of pitches for major tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup. For the 2026 World Cup, which spans the United States, Canada, and Mexico, he is leading an unprecedented pitch research initiative in collaboration with the University of Tennessee and Michigan State University. This project aims to optimise playing surfaces, ensuring they meet the highest standards of performance and sustainability.

A respected voice in the industry, Alan combines technical expertise with strategic vision, helping grounds managers worldwide understand the complexities of stadium pitch preparation. His insights continue to shape the future of pitch management on football’s biggest stages.

Alan Ferguson’s presentation will focus on the latest innovations and strategies in pitch preparation and management, with insights from his work on optimising playing surfaces for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Matt Greiner – Director of Groundskeeping, San Francisco 49ers

Matt Greiner joined the San Francisco 49ers as an assistant groundskeeper in 2009 and worked his way up to become Director of Groundskeeping. Previously, he spent 10 seasons as the Senior Manager & Head Groundskeeper. In his current role, Matt oversees the maintenance of all playing surfaces and landscaping at Levi’s Stadium and the team’s training facility in Santa Clara.

Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers, opened in 2014 and has a capacity of 71,000. In addition to NFL games, the stadium hosts college football, concerts by internationally renowned artists such as Metallica, and major events like Copa América 2024, Super Bowl LX in 2026, and the FIFA World Cup 2026. During the World Cup, it will be referred to as the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium and is set to host five group matches and one round-of-32 match.

In his presentation, Matt will share insights about his work at Levi’s Stadium, including maintaining a world-class NFL natural grass pitch and preparing for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Fredrik Cornell – CEO, Strawberry Arena

Fredrik Cornell is the CEO of the Strawberry Arena in Stockholm, Sweden. In his role, Fredrik is used to focus on the big picture. However, he likes to get hands-on with the technologies on the ground because he believes the pitch is the most important asset of a stadium.

The Strawberry Arena is the largest stadium in Scandinavia, with a capacity of 50,000, and features one of the world’s northernmost natural grass pitches. Despite allowing only 10% of natural sunlight to reach the pitch and hosting 50 events annually — including concerts and both international and national sporting events — the pitch remains highly praised for its quality.
